Aboard the Mary Marshall

Andrew Shaw and his crew led the Mary Marshall along the James River for the annual Batteau Festival, which features 18 crews who navigate wooden batteaux resembling the 18th- and early 19th-century cargo boats. As they travel the 120-mile journey, from Lynchburg, Va. to Maiden’s Landing, they stop at historic towns along the way and celebrate the cultural heritage of this legendary river basin which was crucial to early settlement.
