Starting Over

Ruby and her son Cortez have come a long way since they were homeless. Together they sought shelter at The Salvation Army after moving back to Ruby’s hometown of Lynchburg, Va. to start a new life for themselves. Through the help of social service organizations, Ruby was able to gain back her independence and now works as a nursing assistant at a home for the elderly. As a former resident of Miriam’s House, a shelter for homeless women and children which helped her find a full-time job and a place to call home, Ruby still struggles to provide for herself and her 14-year-old son.
